    Using Good Biomechanics to Avoid Injury

    Many people don't realize that most serious back injuries, where a disc is "blown" for example,
    occurs when one is both twisting and bending the back. Some people think that picking up
    a big weight is the danger, but I have seen patients blow a disc by doing such things as:
    1) Bending over to tie their left shoe
    2) Crossing their leg in church
    3) Reaching into their pickup bed to retrieve something.
     
    As you will note, it's the combination of bending and twisting of the spine
    that puts your back into a particularly vulnerable state.
     
    Bending itself, i.e. bending forward at the waist, can not only cause injury,
    but aggravate one.
     
    When you pick up a weight, at home or at work, especially bringing it from
    ground level to waist or chest level, you need to LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS and
    keep the back straight ! This may SEEM to take a fraction of a second extra
    time, and if you measure doing it that way as opposed to bending at the waist,
    you will see it does not really take that much longer, but can protect your
    back greatly from injury or aggravated injury.
     
    So, think..before you bend and lift!
